THE BACKGROUND

Our client was a private equity backed company that was preparing for an exit within the next couple of years.

They were in the business of creating training materials primarily for construction and manufacturing companies. They licensed their courses through a Learning Management System (LMS). The had over 1,100 active clients with over 33,000 employees on their current platform.

We were retained to analyze the current E-Learning platform to determine whether improvements and/or cost savings could be achieved.

THE PROBLEM

After interviewing the staff and reviewing their existing e-Learning platform, we discovered several concerns and opportunities, including:

  1. The third-party platform they were licensing was outdated and no longer supported by the vendor

  2. The vendors new and updated platform was cost prohibitive and non-conducive to our client's business model

  3. The limitations of the platform caused an undue burden on the support representatives

THE SOLUTION

We sat down with the LMS manager, supervisor and support representatives to discover:

  1. Their biggest frustrations about the current platform

  2. What features they wish could be added to the system

  3. The most frequent frustrations and/or desired enhancements they hear from their customers

With that information, we researched existing solutions to see if there was any off-the-shelf solution that would address the issues within the constraints of their business model.

After an exhaustive search, we ended up using an open-sourced e-learning platform and customizing it to their specific needs.

Once implemented, we developed a deployment strategy to migrate the existing 1,100 customers and 33,000 users over to the new platform--a process that spanned two months.

THE RESULT

The new e-learning platform streamlined ongoing maintenance processes for the existing customer support representatives. In fact, they will able to decrease the number of representative required to support their customers. In the end, the new platform decreased operating costs by over $150,000 per year--which increased company value by about $1.2 million (given their 8x multiple on EBITDA).
